Malibu is famous for a reason. It has a gorgeous stretch of coastline with equally beautiful mountains behind it. There are stunning views from every angle and no shortage of ways to celebrate in this iconic town. As a Los Angeles based elopement photographer Malibu is my favorite local spot to craft elopement experiences since there are so many unique ceremony spots, hiking trails, beaches, and activities to fill your day with.
When to Elope
The best part about eloping in Malibu is that the weather is nice year round! You can elope in Malibu during any season, however there are some differences between the seasons to take into account.
Winter: Temperatures are generally mild but can get a little chilly and there’s a higher chance of rain, however the sun sets directly over the beach in the winter and the rain can make the mountains more lush and green!
Spring: The wildflowers are blooming in the spring and temperatures start to get a bit warmer. There is a weather phenomenon on the California coast called May Grey to keep in mind though, where a thick marine layer hangs over the coast in the mornings in May. It usually clears up by the afternoon, however there are days where it sticks around through sunset.
Summer: May Grey can also extend into June Gloom where the same thick marine layer hangs around into June as well. This usually clears up by July and the rest of the summer months are warm but it can get pretty crowded with tourists and people enjoying the beaches.
Fall: This is the best time of year in Malibu. The temperates are similar to summer, there is no more marine layer, and the summer crowds have thinned out. You can’t go wrong with an elopement during the fall months!

Where to Elope
Malibu has so many beautiful beaches and hiking trails if you want a gorgeous backdrop for your vows. There are also some beautiful small venues you can consider as well. Below are a list of some of my favorite spots in the area.
Point Dume: This is one of the most beautiful and varied spots in Malibu to have a ceremony and get gorgeous photos taken. There are cliffs, sandy beaches, and an easy hiking trail with beautiful lookouts over the ocean. You may want to bring a pair of comfortable shoes for this one, but it will be worth it for sure.
El Matador Beach: This is an iconic sandy beach in Malibu with beautiful rock formations. The light is gorgeous here especially at sunrise, golden hour, and sunset and there are many breathtaking photo spots. This beach does get very crowded so I highly recommend a weekday wedding, and the tide schedule will have to be monitored as high tide takes over most of the beach but these logistics are things that I will help you plan around!
Topanga Beach: This beach is a bit quieter and is a famous surfing spot. There is lots of sand but it is also a bit rocky in parts. It is very close to Topanga State Park with lots of hiking trails so this is another great option for a beach + hiking elopement combo.
Leo Carrillo State Park: This beach is similar to El Matador with rock formations, but it is a bit quieter and less crowded. This is also a dog friendly beach if you are looking to include your dog in your wedding day!
Surfrider Hotel: Located on the Pacific Coast Highway with view overlooking Surfrider Beach.
Adamson House: A beautiful Spanish Colonial Revival house on the beach with stunning views.

How to Spend Your Elopement Day
As I mentioned above there are so many ways to celebrate in Malibu and have a truly unique one-of-a-kind elopement experience. Aside from enjoying the beaches, hiking trails and beautiful views here are some ideas for how to spend your day.
-Take a dip in the ocean together or go surfing if that’s your thing!
-If surfing isn’t your thing, stand-up paddle boarding could be an option as well.
-Have a picnic on the beach.
-Go wine tasting! There are quite a few wineries and vineyards in Malibu to enjoy.
-Rent a vintage car and drive up the PCH. Bonus points if it’s a convertible for those shots of your hair flying in the wind.
-Sunset boat ride/cruise on the ocean. This is such a fun way to cap off a perfect elopement day!

Where to Stay
Malibu has many hotels and Airbnbs to offer in different price ranges for an unforgettable stay. I recommend staying in Malibu proper or nearby Topanga if you want a relaxed and scenic spot to slow down. If you want a mix of coastal scenery and some city energy you can stay in Santa Monica or Venice as well which aren’t too far from Malibu but have more restaurants, nightlife, and better access to the rest of LA.
Below are some specific hotel and airbnb recommendations in the area but there are plenty more to choose from.
Calamigos Ranch and Spa – A large luxury resort in Malibu.
The Surfrider Hotel – An upscale boutique hotel on the PCH near the beach with a beautiful rooftop.
Malibu Beach Inn – Located right on the beach with beach chairs/umbrellas, a spa, and rooms with beautiful views.
Junior Suite Eleven – Airbnb apartment right on the same beach as Malibu Beach Inn.
Tiny Home in Malibu – A tiny home airbnb with mountain and ocean views.
